Shane
👋 Hey HIPpies, we are excited to introduce you to Shane!
Here is is story as told by his Mam:
Shane is 5 years old and was diagnosed with Perthes when he was just 2 ½ years old.
He had a limp and would hop around like a little kangaroo, which concerned us, so we took him to get checked out.
He was diagnosed immediately with Perthes in both hips and was referred to Temple Street Children’s Hospital Dublin to be under the care of Mr. Conor Green, who is an amazing doctor.
We were told that his left hip was more advanced and wasn’t in great shape, but his right hip was in better condition and Dr. Green wanted to operate as quickly as he could.
Time went by and then COVID hit while we were still on a waiting list for his operation. Finally our day came and Shane got a frame fitted on his right hip and his road to recovery begun!
He had his frame on for 16 weeks and is now two weeks post-op after having his frame removed. He is like a different child altogether and his physio is over the moon with the movements Shane is able to do now.
We are scheduled to see his doctors in 4 weeks for X-rays and to review the work that was done in his right hip. After that we will hopefully have a plan on what to do with his left hip as well.
We are hoping to have Shane back to full health in the next two years.
Thank you for taking the time to share Shane’s story and help spread the word for Perthes. In is so uncommon and our main objective is to raise awareness of this condition.
Take care,
Bronagh — Shanes Mam 💙
