Shae
Shae, turning 9 in September, has Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) Type 3/4, diagnosed before birth.
OI causes Shae’s bones to break more easily due to a genetic lack of good quality collagen.
Dr. Kishore Mulpuri is Shae’s orthopaedic surgeon, and just recently implanted Shae’s second set of Fassier-Duval telescoping rods in the shaft of his femurs. The rods straighten Shae’s femurs, reduce fractures, as well as reduce pain, bone displacement and need for surgery when there is fracture.
Shae has been through more than 35-40 fractures in his life, mostly femurs, from minor falls. The femur rods enable Shae to walk and run when he’s not recovering from a fracture or surgery. When he is well Shae plays on a baseball, basketball and swim team.
Shae’s family lives in the interior of B.C. and his mom, Lisa said, We are so grateful for Dr. Mulpuri’s willingness to treat Shae from a distance using X-rays from our local hospital if we don’t need to come in!”
