Asher was born in a frank breech position at 26 weeks and 2 days due to rupture of membranes at 18 weeks, which caused low fluid in the womb. Due to this, he was born with severe bilateral Hip Dysplasia.
At 4 months old Asher tried the Pavlik harness but showed no progress, so it was decided he would need open hip reduction surgery at about 1 year.
Asher underwent his first surgery (on his left hip) in August of 2021. The surgery was very successful and Asher was placed in a Spica cast for 12 weeks and then an abdominal wrap until his next surgery date.
Fast to August 2022 and Asher had his second open hip reduction/pelvic osteotomy.
Another successful surgery and another 12 weeks in a Spica cast – and Asher did it!
He is now recovering in a Rhino brace for 3 more months after which his family will get to see if he can walk.
“Thanks to the orthopaedic team at BC Children’s Hospital for taking amazing care of my boy. We are forever grateful.” – Kelsey (Asher’s Mom)
