Hey HIPpies, meet Jordyn! She is part of our online community and is excited to share her story in hopes that it will help others who have been diagnosed with Hip Dysplasia.

💬 At 2 months old my Mom started worrying when she noticed that my legs opened a little further than they should when changing my diapers. She took me to a Paediatric Doctor to have me assessed, and I was diagnosed with Hip Dysplasia.

I was placed in a hip brace for 4-6 months, and I wore it close to 24/7. When I completed the brace wearing period, it was assumed that my Hip Dysplasia had been corrected, and no follow up was needed.

⏩ Fast forward to when I was 13 years old...

I was running in a track and field meet when a health care professional in the stands made a comment to my Mom concerning my gait. Out of caution I was referred to a Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon. After having X-rays and my first consultation, I found out that my hips had not properly developed, as previously assumed.

This led to my first two surgeries — a right pelvic and femoral osteotomy.

⏳ The recovery took close to a year. But it was worth it as I began to live an almost pain free life, which I had not experienced yet! Before my surgeries, I thought the pain I had been living with was normal.

A few years down the road, during the summer of 2018, I began to have pain in my left hip. It felt all too familiar. I knew that it was deteriorating like my right hip had.

🥼 I underwent a full left hip replacement during November of 2020 at 20 years old, during the peak of Manitoba’s second wave of Covid-19.

Currently I am 9 months post op and am fully recovered from the replacement.

But that’s not the end of my story. I recently received the diagnosis of early stage Rheumatoid Arthritis. My right hip has begun to deteriorate quickly.

🩺 I am meeting with my surgeon this week to consider doing a full right hip replacement.

Hip Dysplasia can be an isolating journey at times…

👯‍♀️ However family, friends, and Hip Dysplasia awareness accounts make a big difference!!

💚 Thank you for reading about my story and I hope that it helps other individuals who are going through a similar experience!
